Why Port Forwarding Your Raspberry Pi Is a Bad Idea
Port forwarding is often the first method people try. And it works. But it's rarely the best long-term solution.
What port forwarding actually does
It opens a path from the internet directly to your device. That means anyone can attempt to connect — and your security becomes critical.
The risks
1. Brute-force attacks
Open SSH ports are constantly scanned.
2. Weak credentials
Default passwords get exploited quickly.
3. Lack of monitoring
Many setups don't detect intrusion attempts.
When it might be acceptable
- short-term testing
- controlled environments
- additional protections in place
Better alternatives
- VPN
- SSH keys + restricted access
- zero-trust networking
Final thought
Just because something works… doesn't mean it's safe.
